Despite your absolute best efforts, all the stealthy measurements, and consulting with her best friends, the proposal happens, the tears fall, you slide the breathtaking Clawset lab-grown diamond ring onto her finger… and it does not fit. Panic immediately sets in. Did you just ruin a $5,000 investment? The short answer is: absolutely not. Ordering the wrong ring size is incredibly common, and the jewelry industry has refined the resizing process into an exact science. Here is exactly what happens next.
The Immediate Aftermath
If the ring is slightly too big, she can still wear it for the photos and the initial celebrations; just ensure she is incredibly careful not to let it slide off. If the ring is too small and will not pass the knuckle, do not force it. Simply place it back in the box or let her wear it on a smaller finger for the evening. The romance of the proposal is about the commitment and the beauty of the diamond, not the temporary mechanical fit of the band.
The Resizing Process Explained
Resizing a ring is a standard surgical procedure for a master jeweler. To make a ring smaller, the jeweler cuts a tiny section out of the bottom of the band (the shank), seamlessly solders the two ends back together, and polishes the gold until the seam is entirely invisible. To make a ring larger, they cut the bottom of the band, insert a new, perfectly matched bridge of 14k or 18k gold, and solder it closed. The structural integrity of the ring is completely maintained.
When Resizing is Impossible
There are only two scenarios where a ring cannot be easily resized. First, if the ring is a “full eternity” band, where diamonds wrap 360 degrees around the finger. Because there is no blank metal to cut, an eternity band must be completely remade from scratch. Second, if you need to drastically change the size (e.g., jumping from a size 4 to a size 8). Stretching the metal that severely will warp the head of the ring and cause the center diamond to fall out. In these extreme cases, Clawset Jewelry will work with you to re-manufacture the setting, ensuring your investment is always protected and her ring fits flawlessly.
