How to Read an IGI Certificate for a Lab Diamond

When you purchase a massive luxury asset from Clawset Jewelry, you are not buying a subjective piece of art; you are buying a highly engineered, mathematically graded crystal. To prove its exact value, your lab-grown diamond is accompanied by an independent grading report from the International Gemological Institute (IGI). This certificate is the ultimate blueprint of your investment. However, to the untrained eye, it looks like a dense spreadsheet of scientific jargon. Here is how to read and decode your IGI certificate.

Verifying the Core Identity

At the very top of the report, you will find the “Description.” For a Clawset diamond, this must explicitly state “LABORATORY GROWN DIAMOND.” Directly beneath this is the “Shape and Cutting Style” (e.g., Round Brilliant, Oval, Emerald). The most critical piece of identity data is the “IGI Report Number.” This unique serial number is laser-inscribed on the physical girdle of your diamond. When your ring is delivered, any local jeweler can look through a loupe and match the microscopic laser inscription to this exact certificate, guaranteeing authenticity.

Decoding the 4Cs

The center of the report is the grading section. The “Carat Weight” is obvious, measured to the hundredth decimal. The “Color Grade” ranges from D (completely colorless) to Z (visibly yellow). Because Clawset specializes in elite luxury, you should see grades in the D-E-F or G-H range. The “Clarity Grade” maps the microscopic internal flaws. You want to see VVS1, VVS2, VS1, or VS2, ensuring the stone is completely flawless to the naked eye. Finally, if it is a Round diamond, the “Cut Grade” must be “Ideal” or “Excellent” to guarantee blinding sparkle.

The Proportions and Symmetry

The right side of the certificate displays a cross-section diagram of the diamond, mapping the exact millimeter depth, table percentage, and crown angles. You do not need to be a mathematician to read this; simply look directly below the diagram at the “Polish” and “Symmetry” grades. For maximum light return, both of these metrics should ideally be graded as “Excellent.” A diamond with an Excellent cut, Excellent polish, and Excellent symmetry is known in the industry as a “Triple Ex,” representing the absolute pinnacle of diamond engineering.
