To the naked eye, a brand-new white gold ring and a brand-new platinum ring look absolutely identical. They both offer a stark, high-contrast backdrop that makes a D-color lab-grown diamond explode with brilliance. However, the similarities end the moment you put the ring on. Structurally and chemically, these metals are completely different.
The Rhodium Illusion
The most important fact to understand about White Gold is that it does not actually exist in nature. All gold comes out of the earth yellow. To create “white” gold, yellow gold is mixed with white alloys (like nickel or palladium), but it still retains a faint yellow tint. To make it perfectly white, the ring is plated with a microscopic layer of Rhodium. Over 12 to 18 months of wear, this rhodium plating will slowly rub off on the bottom of the band, revealing the yellowish gold underneath. You will have to pay a jeweler $60 to $100 every year or two to re-dip the ring.
The Platinum Reality
Platinum, on the other hand, is a naturally white metal. It is never plated. When you scratch a platinum ring, the metal underneath is exactly the same icy white as the surface. It will never turn yellow, and it never requires rhodium dipping. Furthermore, platinum is incredibly dense—roughly 20% denser than white gold. When you hold a platinum ring, it feels substantially heavier and more expensive in your hand. The “Patina” Factor
There is one visual trade-off with platinum. While it does not turn yellow, it does scratch differently than gold. When gold scratches, the metal is actually removed. When platinum scratches, the metal just displaces (like clay). Over time, a platinum ring develops thousands of microscopic scratches that create a frosted, matte finish known as a “patina.” Many people love the vintage look of the patina, but if you want that day-one, mirror-like shine, a jeweler must professionally polish the platinum to restore its original luster.
